The 2023 New York Hard Cider Supply Chain Survey launches this week with growers and producers of hard cider in New York State being asked to participate. Developed by the Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Harvest NY team, the Cornell Hard Cider Program Work Team, the New York Cider Association, and Glynwood Center for Regional Food and Farming, the information gathered will help to understand the full scope of growing, production, and distribution along with issues that arise during the process of making and selling hard cider in New York. All growers and producers engaged in the production of hard cider in New York State are asked to take the survey by March 31 of this year. All data collected will be held confidentially and results are expected to be reported in aggregate by early fall. The survey should take less than 20 minutes to complete.

“This supply chain study builds on a series of surveys that we’ve undertaken,” says Greg Peck, Associate Professor of Horticulture, School of Integrative Plant Science. “They started about a decade ago and when compared with the results we’re looking to gather from this year’s survey, the outcomes will be invaluable in helping us gain clarity for support of today’s hard cider production in New York State.”
“Like every manufacturing industry in this state, the New York Cider industry is no stranger to supply chain issues,” says Scott Ramsey, Executive Director of the New York Cider Association. “There are bottlenecks all along the way that create inefficiencies and obstacles to the success of our members’ businesses. We’re all collaborating to better understand these challenges so we can work to streamline the process.”
Cornell Cooperative Extension and Hard Cider Program Work Teams bring together communities of learning and practice that include faculty, staff, CCE educators, industry members and stakeholders to collaborate and innovate on specific extension areas and issues in the hard cider industry. The New York Cider Association was established in 2015 and incubated by Glynwood Center for Regional Food and Farming as a trade association with a mission of supporting its membership as they work to cultivate the hard cider industry in New York State.
